Everything kept back for next spring

The old farmhouses usually had one drawer nobody else was allowed to tidy. It held paper envelopes folded shut and marked in pencil with a name and a year (half-runners, '71, the good ones), and it was worth more than anything else in the house because it was next spring.

The Seed Drawer is where the longer work is kept. The full essays are published here first, the ones that follow a single subject all the way down, whether that is the life inside a handful of loam or the light of the first day, which the old rabbis said was hidden away for later. At each new month the monthly almanac arrives with the moons and the holy days laid out ahead of you. The member chat stays open in between, which is where the good questions turn up and where you can say what is blooming in your own yard and hear back from somebody two states over whose spring is three weeks ahead of yours.

Five dollars a month sounds small and it is not. It is what turns a thing done in stolen hours into work that can be counted on, and it comes from people who decided this was worth paying for before there was much proof. That lands, and it is remembered. Come into the chat when a question turns up, and say what you are seeing out your own window while you are there, because the good material runs in both directions here.
