In the Highlands and the islands the hearth fire was banked every night under its own ashes with a blessing and kindled every morning with another. If it died anyway, somebody walked to the nearest neighbor and carried a live coal home. Fire was something people kept for one another there, and a house that let it go out went next door and asked.
The Firekeepers gather when the year turns. Four times a year, at the old Gaelic quarter days at the start of February, May, August and November, members meet for a live campfire chat: an hour with a reading, a practice and time to talk over what the season has been doing to everybody. Each season also brings a guided workbook, and here it is included rather than bought, because this is the tier that goes further than a daily page has room for.
This tier exists because people said they wanted the harder work and did not want to do it alone, which is the only reason there is a fire to sit around at all. What comes back to you is showing up: the workbook when the season turns, the chat on the night it was promised, and straight answers about what is known against what is only thought. Helpmates, in the old sense of the word. Nobody at this fire is above anybody else at it.
