Forsyth wrote that the saying "connects both worlds, and expresses not only regard for the living, but reverence for the dead." You could say it to a friend across a table. It meant that when the time came you would climb the hill with a stone in your hand and set it on the heap with the others, which would stand a little higher for your having been there.

Today is All Souls, kept for everyone who has died, the well remembered and the ones whose names have gone. This Sabbath's reading, Chayei Sara, opens on the death of Sarah. Abraham set out at seventy-five with no map and has walked that country for more than sixty years without owning any of it. "I am a stranger and a sojourner with you," he tells the people of the place, asking for a burying ground. He weighs out four hundred shekels of silver for a field with a cave in it, and the first ground he holds in the land he was promised is the ground that holds her.

Many Jewish mourners still leave a small stone on a grave, though no one can say for certain when that began. In the mountains of the South, families gather on a named Sunday in the warm months for Decoration Day, to clean the burying ground and set out flowers, then eat together on the grounds. A name weighs nothing. I wonder if that is why so many people, so far apart, have wanted something in the hand to carry up the hill.

On the Moon's own day, with the light thinning toward the new on the ninth, you might pick up one small stone at the midday pause and set it on a windowsill for someone, saying the name as you put it down.

You can only see a little way into a morning like this, a few bends of the stream and then the whole valley gone white.

The fog over moving water in the fall is often the water's own doing. The stream is still holding some of the warmth summer left in it, and when the cold air slides down off the hills before dawn, that warmth rises from the surface as mist. What hides the hills is the creek giving back what it kept.

The water keeps going anyway. It has never needed to see the far end of the meadow to find its way there. It only needs the next stretch of ground to lie a little lower than this one.

Some mornings that is all the light we are given, and it may be enough. What is the one bend in front of you this week?

A pot of mums on the porch step sat closed all summer, waiting for something the sun could not give it.

Chrysanthemums keep time by the night. They will not set a bud until the dark runs long enough, unbroken, and a grower who wants to hold them back only has to switch on a lamp at midnight. It is All Souls today, the day kept for every one of the faithful dead, and I have been wondering how often we do the same to our own grief, breaking its night with small lights before anything has had the chance to open.

At two in the morning on the first of November the clocks fall back, and most of us sleep through the moment the hour is returned.

It lands this year on a day that has always been about what is given back. The old Gaelic year turned on this date, and in some houses a chair was left at the table because the dead were thought to come home that night. The church keeps the same two days for its saints and for everyone else who has gone before us. Under the hardwoods, last month's leaves are already being carried back into the roots.

This week's essay asks what we owe the dead, and wonders whether it is less a debt than a kind of keeping.

An oyster reef is built the only way it can be: each young oyster settles on the shell of one that lived before it.

It is All Saints, and in the old Irish year it is Samhain, the first morning of winter, when the herds came home and the household counted what it had. Down at the creek the roast shells are going back into the water in heaps, so the young ones drifting on the tide have something to hold.

Today's almanac follows that thread from the creek to an old Irish calendar of saints and a field with a cave at the end of it, with journaling prompts and an evening review for the long nights.

A thousand years ago a poet rode up to three Swedish farms on the elves' night and found every door shut.

He made rueful verses about it on the cold road, and they are nearly all we know of the álfablót, kept at home behind barred doors in the last weeks of autumn. This week the wild persimmons are soft on the fencerows, and if you split a seed you will find a small white shape folded inside, the one the old weather lore reads for the winter ahead.

Women in the Highlands and Islands said these words over the last work of the day. Carmichael describes them spreading the embers in a circle on the hearth and parting it into three. One peat went down in the name of the God of Life, one for the God of Peace and one for the God of Grace, and then ash was drawn over all of it in the name of the Three of Light, enough, in his words, to subdue the fire but not to extinguish it. He smoothed and joined what he gathered, as collectors of his century did, so the prayer comes to us as a nineteenth-century record of a living practice.

Tonight the Sabbath comes in at sundown, and the Mishnah asks something close to this of a Jewish kitchen. A pot may sit on a wood-fired stove through the holy day only once the coals have been swept out or covered with ash. Two peoples a long way apart, each laying ash over the coals before a long night, so the warmth keeps without anyone tending it.

Anyone who has kept a woodstove through a mountain winter knows the same motion with the poker before bed. Tomorrow night is Samhain, the old Gaelic door into winter, and the clocks fall back while we sleep, so by Sunday the dark will be at the window before supper. I keep wondering what in me has been burning at full draw all season, and what it would be to bank it for a while and trust it to be there in the morning.

At the midday pause you might choose one thing to bank tonight, a worry or a half-finished piece of work, and say a plain word over it before you sleep.

A man kept the door of a Jesuit college on Majorca for forty-six years and answered every bell as if the Holy were ringing it.

He came to that door after burying his wife and all three of his children. The Jesuits keep his memory today. In tomorrow's Torah portion Abraham sits at his own tent door in the heat of the day, and before sunrise Venus is slipping back into the dawn through the morning door. Samhain is tomorrow night.

Today's almanac is a day of doors, with journaling prompts, a small Samhain keeping with stones and a supper made for whoever turns up.
